Editor's note (July 2022):

Shopify has transitioned its Shopify Lite plan to something called [Shopify Starter]. Many of the previous features remain, but you can expect some wonderful changes, like a drop in price from $9 per month to $5 per month. In addition, Starter members receive tools to monetize a link in social media bios.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Read our Shopify Starter review.

Other features for the Shopify Starter plan include selling on social media sites like WhatsApp and Instagram, along with analytics, customer support, and order management. Itโ€™s not anything like the regular ecommerce platform plans (you donโ€™t get a full website with checkout functionality), but Shopify Starter provides an incredibly inexpensive way for creators, bloggers, and smaller stores to sell products on their already existing sites. Or, you could simply use the Starter plan to sell on social networks, without building your own online store at all.

We encourage you to check out our Shopify Starter plan review, as that explains the differences between Shopify Starter and the now retired Shopify Lite plan explained in this article.

Try Shopify for only $1 for the first month!

Shopify has begun offering a special deal for sellers who sign up for a new Shopify plan. That deal? Start a 3-day free trial and enjoy your first month of Shopify for $1. Learn more about the free trial here.

This offer is is now available on all standard plans: Starter, Basic, Shopify, and Advanced.

The Shopify Lite plan is not only inexpensive, but it allows you to create a simple ecommerce store within minutes. That sounds like a pretty great deal, right? Well, it depends on the situation. For most online stores I'd recommend some of the regular Shopify pricing plans, considering you receive a full online store and shopping cart, and the features are far more robust for scaling up.

However, at $9 per month, it's tempting to look at Shopify Lite and think about implementing it for your own store. And for some businesses, it may be the perfect solution for selling products online. In this Shopify Lite review, we'll talk about how the cheapest Shopify plan works and when you should be using it.

Not only that, but we'll go deeper into what benefits the Shopify Lite plan can have for your business and maybe if you should consider using Shopify Lite for one side of your business–alongside a regular Shopify pricing plan for another side.

With all ecommerce platforms, you often have to sift through the mess of features being thrown at you. Luckily, Shopify is pretty good at keeping the details straightforward and ensuring you get the most for your money. However, many people get confused by the Shopify Lite plan, so keep reading to learn more about why it might, or might not, be right for you.

Just before you start though, you might want to take a look at our Shopify reviews and Shopify Pricing guide.

Shopify Lite At a Glance

As mentioned before, the Shopify Lite plan sells for $9 per month. It's the cheapest solution you can find at Shopify and also undercuts some of the many other ecommerce platforms on the market. The next step up in the Shopify pricing hierarchy is the Basic Shopify plan, which goes for $29 per month.

The main difference between Shopify Lite and the other plans is that you're not getting a full online store with a shopping cart. Therefore, you can't technically build a home for your brand in Shopify.

Rather, the Shopify Lite plan integrates with an already existent website or social media page. For instance, if you're running a blog on WordPress and decide to start selling some custom-made items, the Shopify Lite plan would allow you to keep that same blog and integrate some products to sell on that site.

Whereas a regular Shopify store (like with the Basic Shopify plan) would force you to create a completely separate website in addition to that blog.

Social Media Selling

One reason you may consider the Shopify Lite plan is if you're only trying to sell on Facebook, and nothing else. The same goes for those who maybe have a pre-existent blog and want to sell on both the blog and Facebook.

With Shopify Lite, a fully integrated Facebook store is provided to you. Therefore, you can advertise on Facebook and lead people to that store. They don't have to leave Facebook to make a purchase, cutting down on the number of steps to make a sale.

The store merges with your current Facebook Business page since it adds a Shop tab on the page and allows for product galleries and your own shopping cart inside Facebook.

What's cool about this feature is that all of the products already in your Shopify Lite plan can be synced to the Facebook store. There's no need to upload products multiple times, so you only have to work from the Shopify dashboard and not worry much about what's going on Facebook.  Each of your products syncs consistently with your Shopify account. So if you make a change to a product image, price, or description, it's reflected in the Facebook store as well.

What's more is that the Shopify Facebook integration includes a beautiful checkout module, right inside of Facebook. The buying is secure, and they won't have to jump to your website–which often causes a bit of a shock and may convince people to not buy from your store. Customers also have the option to save their contact and payment info inside Facebook. This way, they can purchase more items from you in the future without punching in the same info all the time.

Overall, this is a solid, customizable Facebook store with syncing tools included. Some companies like to start by selling exclusively on Facebook. So, it makes sense to go with Shopify Lite if you're in that boat. The same can be said for those who have a blog and Facebook page. There's no reason to pay for a full Shopify website unless you plan on selling hundreds of products.

Better Customer Support Through Facebook Messenger With The Shopify Lite Plan

Since much of the Shopify Lite plan involves selling on Facebook, it makes sense that customer support is completed through Facebook as well. Therefore, you not only receive the integrated Facebook store, but you get a live chat module powered by the Facebook Messenger app.

If you've used the Facebook Messenger app, you know that it's a solid tool for chatting with friends without leaving Facebook. For business, it has excellent functionality for customers to contact you with quick questions and receive relevant responses with the help of automated product information.

As an example, a customer might see that you're selling a bicycle on your Facebook page. She has some questions about how it compares to one of your other bikes.

Facebook Messenger sends you a notification when a message like this comes through. You can take the Facebook Messenger app anywhere, so you can technically run your support side of the business without hiring too many people.

The Messenger app lets you reply with any information you have on hand, then you can also send out product information from your online store. What's great about these little information modules is that they have call-to-action buttons for viewing online, purchasing, reading descriptions, and more.

Once the chat conversation is over, the customer has the opportunity to buy the product right from the Facebook Messenger chat box.

shopify lite plan facebook messenger

And…saving the best for last: Facebook Messenger will send out shipping updates, tracking codes, and a View Order button for your customers to see exactly when they can expect to receive the product. It's all done in the Facebook Messenger app, so your customers can shop from a comfortable place like Facebook.

Shopify Lite Review: It's For Previously Built Websites

Besides Facebook selling, the Shopify Buy button is the main feature from Shopify Lite. This area of the plan provides embeddable modules for products and collections. You can also embed a shopping cart and customize each module for your brand.

Essentially, the Buy button should be used when you already have a successful, branded website. I also like it for companies that want to have the online store as more of a side revenue.

You're basically saying, “I don't want to build a completely new website, yet I'd like to sell some products on the site I currently have.”

And that's awesome! Shopify Lite lets you upload your products and embed the Buy buttons, with product information, into your website. Therefore, a travel blogger can sell hiking boots, custom printed shirts, and canvas art, all from the same blog. A hardware store with a website could test out the ecommerce world by selling a certain number of products from the existing site.

Shopify Lite Review: It's For Accepting Credit Cards On-the-go

Shopify Lite plan - pos card reader

If you'd like to sell your product in-person, Shopify Lite might be a good solution for you. There are many options for selling in the real world–like Stripe, PayPal, and Square. However, Shopify Lite opens up the opportunity to sell offline and online.

In short, you get the functionality needed for an online store, as well as a card swiper (for free!)

This makes sense for companies going to trade or craft shows since you're probably selling online at some point and also trying to make some money on the road.

What's great is that your inventory is tracked across all channels, and you can sync products directly from your Shopify store. It also lets you process any form of payment, apply discounts, customize taxes, and process refunds.

Shopify Lite Review: It's For Sending Invoices

The final reason you would think about Shopify Lite is if your company mainly processes wholesale, phone, or custom orders. This is an affordable plan for sending out invoices and accepting payment from customers without any problems.

The process involves writing up a custom invoice. It then gets sent to the customer, who then makes the payment through the Shopify shopping cart. It's not much different from other invoicing tools, but with Shopify Lite you also get the extra tools for selling online, Facebook, and offline. Therefore, you have more options for bringing in money.

Is The Shopify Lite Plan Right for You?

There are a few reasons you might go with the Shopify Lite plan.

  • The first is if you run a site and want to start selling some products on there–without making a completely new website.
  • The second is for those who want to sell products through Facebook with the help of a live chat module.
  • The third is for those who want to sell offline.
  • The fourth is for sending out invoices.

Overall, the Shopify Lite plan makes sense in certain situations. If you have any questions about this Shopify Lite review, let us know in the comments.

  1. Kim LaBuff says:

With Shopify Lite, is there a transaction fee? Which payment methods can be utilized?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Kim, there is a 2% transaction fee, when not using Shopify Payments. Credit card rates are the same as with the Basic Shopify Plan, 2,7% in person, 2.9% + 30ยข USD when selling online.

  2. Sarah Nelin says:

I have shopify lite and Facebook shop all setup but it will only let me take payments through a website but shopufy lite doesnt allow me to setup a shop on shopify. Why cant i change it to checkout through facebook? Is it because Im Canadian? Thank you for your help.

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Sarah, this feature isn’t supported anymore.

  3. Andrew says:

Thanks for this! I’m currently on the trial for Shopify Lite, but am encountering an issue when trying to add Facebook as a selling channel. “Facebook channel is only compatible with stores that: Have an online store”. I am wondering if this is a new issue, or if this will be resolved and become compatible once I mark my products as available?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Andrew, unfortunately this feature isn’t available anymore with the Lite plan.

  4. andres says:

I am afraid that the lite plan do no include the facebook shop integration anymore. I am trying to set this up and the system is asking me to have an online store, so I asked to support and they told me that I need an online store because facebook recently requires it.

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Andres, yes this feature isn’t supported with the Lite plan anymore.

  5. Diana says:

Hi! Thank you for your article. I have one question about the shipment with shopify lite plan. Can I sell my products on Facebook and Instagram and ship with DHL because I have a signed contract?
    Thank you

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Diana,

Selling on Facebook and Instagram using Shopify Lite isn’t possible anymore.

  6. Crystal says:

Hi, i’m only selling one product and I’m planning to sell it on amazon too. I already created a website myself. I know the regular shopify account allows amazon fulfillment, but can the lite do that as well?
Very helpful article by the way, thanks!

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hey Crystal, as far as I know this is available starting with Basic Shopify, but you can check with Shpify’s support team directly just to make sure.

  7. Carmen says:

Hello, I am considering the Lite plan as I grow into a full fledged store. Will I be able to switch easily, or would I need to begin from scratch?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Carmen, you will be able to upgrade quite easy!

  8. Rob Rimavicus says:

I am launching a bloody mary mix brand. I already have a huge facebook presence through the bar I developed the mix for, and a growing instagram. Starting with one, and I wont have more than 4-5 products for the next 2 years. I do not have an existing website, but ,to save money, why would it not make sense to build a website on squarespace for 12$ a month and get the lite for 9$….as I have read squarespace has beautiful templates (as opposed to shopify). Is there a flaw in my logic?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

In your case I would suggest building a store but going with the Basic Shopify plan. You will see some great benefits from an SEO perspective.

  9. Julian says:

    Hi,
Would you recommend using lite as a lead page? I’ll need a quite simple (only going to have 1 product for the first year with 5 versions) shop later or (maybe in 3 to 6 months from now) but I already communicating with my customers and they are participating in the development phase. Hence I feel the basic package would be underutilized at the beginning but useful later on.

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

You cannot use Shopify Lite to create a simple landing page, you will need a working website in order to embed their code.

  10. Annie says:

Hi – thank you for the review; it was very helpful. Do you know if one can also set up automatic e-mails with Shopify Lite? For example, when a customer buys something, can one set it up so that an “Thank you for your Order…” e-mail goes out to the customer, and then another one when the item ships?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Yes, definitely!

  11. Dale says:

    Hi
Iโ€™m setting up an online directory where wholesalers can list their business profile and product images.
I was going to monetise it by creating an affiliate link to each of supplierโ€™s website so that when a buyer clicks on the suppliers profile or product image I can track commissions made on any sales.
The only downside to this is that it takes the buyer off my site and onto the suppliers site.
Would Shopify lite work on an online directory?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Dale,

I don’t think using Shopify Lite in this case might work.

  12. HANNAH RODGERS says:

I am using on the Business plan from Ecwid at the moment. I love the functionality and look. However, the price is too high considering I don’t sell very much via my website as it’s new and most of my sales are still on Ebay. I has about 250 products listed so that means I have to pay for the Business plan, which is I think ยฃ35 + VAT each month.

I am wanting to know if Shopify Lite allows you to create categories and to generate code for all of the products and categories to allow you to create a blog post or page showing the categories that can be clicked on, revealing the products.

If you could see what I have created on my Blogger blog using Ecwid and let me know if I could create the same with Shopify Lite I would be very grateful.

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Hannah, Shopify Lite can only be used in these cases: on an existing website, by adding a Buy Button, for selling in person (at events, popup stores etc…) and for creating invoices directly to your customers and accept payments.

  13. Lee says:

    Hey,
currently i do business in whatsapp business.
So do you think i can link it to shopify lite?

    1. Rushil Jain- Ruzeal says:

Yes you should be able to if you only sell through whatsapp and dont need a separate website, which is provided in the $29 shopify plan. Otherwise, this $9 is good enough!

      1. Brian says:

        Hello,

I already have my own website and use PayPal for my shopping cart. Would Shopify lite let me create products with variations such as size and count? Would I also be able to offer discount codes for products?

  14. Patricia Ferreira says:

    Hey there!

Great article! I saw a lot of people had the same question as me!

“Does it function as well for Instagram shopping?” I have just signed up with the free trial and was trying to connect it with our Instagram page and it did not work!

I also have two Instagram accounts associated with our brand, would I be able to still connect Shopping on Facebook and Instagram for both FB pages and Insta accounts?

I would love to learn more! Thanks again for providing this great information!

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Patricia,

Shopify Lite can now be used be used in these cases only: on an existing website, by adding a Buy Button, for selling in person (at events, popup stores etcโ€ฆ) and for creating invoices directly to your customers and accept payments.

  15. Fiona says:

Thanks for the great article! What I really would like to see is some examples of how Lite works on already existing websites – do you have any egs of a live site? We already have a site but want to start selling a handful of products too and want to see how the ‘shop’ page would look?…

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hey Fiona,

We donโ€™t have such a list available. But you have the option to test try it free for 14 days.

  16. Dimitris says:

    Hi,
Great article! We are just trying to figure out if we can use Facebook page shop in conjunction with Shopify lite for an instance where there exists no e-shop as such, but instead we have created a Facebook page shop and we want to use Shopify lite only in order to have a credit card checkout… for example via paypal. (I am referring to the Shopping tab on Facebook business page…not the new product recently announced by Facebook aka Facebook Shops). Please bear in mind that we are not talking for the US, we are located in Athens, Greece.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dimitris

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Dimitris, unfortunately this is not possible anymore with Shopify Lite.

  17. Chand Patel says:

    Hi there,
I viewed some of shopify basics back end features like shipping, customs , tax etc and thought it was really good. However, I want to build my site on squarespace as I’m finding the building of the website much easier than shopify. Am I right in saying that with shopify Lite, I won’t get all these useful back end features? Would be good if you could shed some light on this.

    Many Thanks, Chand Patel

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello Chand, the available feaeetres would be limited to the ones from this list:

      – unlimited products
      – unlimited bandwidth and online storage
      – Shopify point of sale
      – gift cards
      – online sales channels
      – fraud analysis
      – manual order creation
      – discount codes
      – staff
      – overview dashboard
      – finance reports
      – customer support

  18. Jane says:

    Hello

I currently have an Etsy shop and my FB advertising links to there. My products require some personalisation. Is this possible with Shopify Lite? Also would you think I would benefit using SL as opposed to my shop now button which takes customers to my Etsy shop aside from the messenger chat feature? Thanks in advance ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Jane,

You will be able to add variants to your products using Shopify Lite.

  19. keyen says:

Hello !! this is a great article ! here is my question .
I have a web page , what I need is to link the buy button to a fulfillment 3pl provider . This , because a only have one product . Is this a good idea ? or I should have a different plan

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hey Keyen, The Basic Shopify plan would be more suited for this.

  20. Ophir says:

    Hi Bogdan
    1. Is Shopify lite already availble out of the USA now?
    2. If I start with a lite plan, can it be upgraded later to a reguler plan with any theme?
    Thanks

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Ophir,

Some features might only be available in US and Canada only. But it depends on how to you intend to use it. You can start with Shopify Lite and upgrage at any time. You can find more info about Shopify’s Pricing plans here.

  21. Dutchy says:

  23. mark says:

anyone know if you can put the buy (lite plan) button on a free wordpress.com (ones with subdomains) site which dosen’t allow plugins unless you pay extra?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hey Mark, as far as I know it should work with the paid plans.

      1. Mandy Cleveland says:

I don’t think it works with WordPress premium I think you have to upgrade to business which defeats the object slightly, although so far I’m impressed with the ease of adding products I just wish it would display on the site. I think more of an issue with WordPress than Shopify

  24. Ambar says:

Hi, i want to know if shopify lite, besides facebook, it can also get connected with Instagram? Thank You.

Hi, This is a good article. I just want to know that if I am selling any physical product by using the facebook store or my own website store with shopify lite plan, then whether the shipping can be taken care by the shopify team ? Or I have to take care of the logistics and shopify can help me with only taking the payments ?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Hello, order management is inluded with the Shopify Lite plan. The Shopify team doesn’t handle shipping but they do offer a solution called Shopify Fulfillment, you can read our review here.

  27. Chuck Schmidt says:

I sell on Etsy.com and have for many years. Are there any advantages to using Shopify either with a regular plan or the lite plan, or am I simply overlapping if I do? I didn’t know if my items would show up in different searches using Shopify or if they’d be in the same places and therefore doubling up on the same ad between Etsy and Shopify. I don’t do any POS selling as of yet and if I did then Etsy has supplied me with a card reader so I already have what I need.

  28. Wayne Sayers says:

Really enjoyed this article – along with many other articles on your website they are all very informative.
Looking at changing my current e-commerce setup to (1) using Shopify Lite with (2) a new Facebook store and lining Instagram but (3) currently use Square POS solution via a website I plan to get rid off.
Would the above combination be compatible and be a relatively simple and easy solution to start off a new online store?
    Many thanks
    Wayne

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

Yes that is possible, but I would consider building your own online store as well.

  29. Emilia says:

Hi, thank you for the concise and useful article. Is it possible to pay with a credit card (not attached to paypal) when online shopping at a facebook shop through Shopify Lite? Or is payment only possible with paypal? This information is unclear to me. I am asking this as paypal is not that popular in several European markets. Many thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

Hello Emilia, right now Facebook Pay is also available in some countries.

Can I set up categories for my products through any of the Shopify plans? I want the “store” to display certain types of items together. How is this accomplished when adding all of my inventory on to Shopify? Thank you.

      Hello,

Of course, you can setup as many categories as you need!

Selling digital products on Facebook using Shopify Lite is possibible using the Digital Downloads app.

      Hey Steve,

Bogdan Thank you for your article about Shopify Lite!
    My question is:
Is there a limitation on the times I use the Buy Buttom? Can I use it on several Facebook Fan Pages or do I have to buy for every page a new Lite Plan?
Can you give me some Facebook adresses where the shopify Lite Buy Buttom is been used, so I can see how it looks.
    Thank you in advance,
    Rob

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Rob,

The are no limitations on the times you can use the buy button but Shopify does not currently support linking multiple Facebook stores.

  38. AMBER PATTON says:

What is the difference between having a Shopify Lite account and just opening a free Facebook shop instead directly on the Facebook platform? What would be the benefit of paying $9 a month and using Shopify?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hey Amber,

One of Shopify’s many advantages is that it also lets you establish your store on Facebook without having to deal with much of the technical hurdles.

All you need to do is go to your Shopify panel and add an app called Facebook Channel to your setup.

  39. Jane says:

Hi, I am wanting to sell on Facebook and Instagram with Shopify Lite, but every time I go in to register it asks me to choose a plan and the Lite Plan is not shown. How does the lite plan create a catalogue of your products to connect to FB and Instagram? I would also like to sell on my WordPress but it is not a business plan so can’t get the “Buy button”

    Thanks very much
    Jane

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Jane,

You can use this link to sign up for the Shopify Lite plan.

Let me know if it works.

Here is an article that you might find useful if you are planning to sell on Facebook.

Are you able to get the Buy Now button in Instagram using Shopify LIte?

  41. Upgrade says:

Can you start with a Lite plan & later upgrade to a Basic plan or would I have to start over to create a website in Basic?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello,

The main difference between Shopify Lite and the other plans is that you’re not getting a full online store with a shopping cart. Therefore, you can’t technically build a shop for your brand in Shopify using the Lite Plan.

Great article that demystifies lots of questions about Shopify Lite (SL). Thanks to Joe for writing it and to Bogdan for following up on the comments.
My question is about customization. How much customization headroom is there with SL? Things like the look and feel of a product listing and checkout. Can we adapt the way SL behaves within a WordPress site?
    Thanks!

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Ian,

We’re really glad you found our blog useful!

Unfortunately the customization aspect of the Buy Button is limited. Please check out this guide for more info.

So Iโ€™m super interested in Shopify Lite but can you dropship with it? Or do you have to have inventory with Shopify Lite?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Kiley,

Drop shipping with the SHopify Lite plan is possible with Oberlo.

Hello! I have a Shopify Store that’s been up and running for over a year. I have a new product that I’d like o promote separately from my main store. I would be using Facebook and other socials to promote it so it looks like Lite might be a good way to go. My main question is – shipping. Now I buy postage through my Shopify store. It’s easy and works very well. Is there any sort of shipping utility in Lite?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Peter,

You can ship through the Shopify options with Lite plan as well.

  45. Felicity says:

Hi, do you know if the website would have to be a business website to have the Shopify lite add on? Or would a personal website such as WordPress Personal account for example allow the add on? Seeing as it says it’s not for monetising?

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Felicity,

As far as I know only WordPress.com Business plan users can purchase and embed Shopifyโ€™s Buy Button.

  46. Stuart says:

    Hi
We currently don’t have a stand alone website and sell our antique and vintage jewellery through ebay and etsy using their own payment processing methods.
Would Shopify lite be an appropriate ecommerce package to add products to our facebook site, and possibly going forward on the instragram shopping feature, as we only need to add payment processing and have no interest at the moment having our own website.

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Stuart,

Keep in mind that having a Facebook shop is a feature gradually rolling out in the US only. If you already have a Facebook shop the using SHopify Lite is a good idea.

      Cheers!

Hi Joe! Thanks very much for this review, it’s very helpful. I’m trying to find a solution to sell tangible products with a kajabi site (since I will also have online courses). Do you know if shopify lite would work in Kajabi? Would that be confusing to customers if they want digital and tangible products? Would they have to pay them separately? Or do you have any other idea how I can simply and seamlessly sell tangible products within Kajabi? Sorry… lots of questions. Thanks so much for your expertise and advice. It would be super helpful. Manuela

    1. Bogdan Rancea says:

      Hello Manuela,

I would suggest contacting Kajabi for more info regarding this, to see if Kajabi will allow you to add external source code.

      Thanks,
