Shopify India Pricing vs Global Pricing
Shopify uses the same basic pricing formula everywhere in the world. Let’s take a quick look at how the prices stack up between India, the UK, and the USA:
India | USA | UK | |
---|---|---|---|
Starter | ₹399 | $5 | £5 |
Basic | ₹1,994 | $39 | £19 |
Shopify | ₹7,447 | $105 | £49 |
Advanced Shopify | ₹30,164 | $399 | £249 |
Shopify Plus | Starting at ₹1,52,000 | Starting at $2000 | Starting at £2,000 |
At the time of writing, ₹399 is the equivalent to around $4.79 in USD, so you might actually be saving a little if you’re starting your store in India. However, there are some major differences to think about when looking at Shopify’s Indian pricing too.
For instance, you can’t use Shopify Payments for payment processing, but you still need to pay a transaction fee. The transaction fees on each Shopify plan in India are a little lower than they are elsewhere in the world. However, you’ll need to account for the credit card processing fees of the vendor you choose on top of that.
Is there a Free Shopify Trial in India?
Yes, Shopify allows companies to sign up for a free trial of their software for three days, with no credit card details required.
After this, you can also subscribe to a cheaper plan for Shopify for three months. The first 3 months will only cost you ₹20 per month.
Though Shopify’s free trial isn’t as generous as some of the other “free trial” options offered by ecommerce vendors, the three month offer makes it more appealing in our opinion.
You can also save 25% by choosing a yearly plan. And access a free trial for 3 days. Plus, after your free trial, you can access Shopify for the first 3 months for only ₹20 per month.
Notably, Shopify also offers a “Retail” plan in Indian for in-store POS systems, starting at ₹7,000 per month.
This is similar to the “POS Pro” plan in the US, UK, Canada, and elsewhere.

Does Shopify Work in India?
Yes, Shopify works in India, and the company offers specific plans and tools to merchants in the Indian region. After all, India has the third biggest online shopping base in the world.
However, it’s worth noting that the Shopify experience in India may be a little different to what you get elsewhere.
For instance, you can’t access Shopify Payments, Shopify’s integrated payment processor in India. This means you’ll need to access your own third-party payment processing solution.
Why Should You trust Us?
While Shopify – one of the world’s largest ecommerce platforms – is pretty transparent about its pricing, it can be difficult to get your head around all the different expenses, from subscription costs, to transaction fees.
Since we’ve spent years reviewing platforms like Shopify, and helping entrepreneurs in India (and around the world) build their own online store, we decided to make things a little simpler.
Shopify India Pricing Plans in 2024
Shopify gives Indian merchants plenty of options when it comes to building their own ecommerce website.
For the purpose of this article, we’re not going to cover the Retail plan for in-person sales too much, as that’s intended for Shopify POS customers.
If you want to learn more about Shopify POS and its costs, check out this article.
That leaves us with 3 “core” plans for Indian retailers to choose from, as well as the Starter plan, and the enterprise level plan (Shopify Plus).
Let’s start by covering the 3 core plans in more detail:
- Basic: The Basic Shopify plan costs ₹1,994 per month with 2% transaction fees, and is the cheapest complete Shopify plan (with access to the website builder) for beginners. It includes 2 staff accounts, support for unlimited products, 24/7 customer support and multiple sales channels. Plus, you get customer segmentation, discount codes, and basic reports.
- Shopify: The standard “Shopify” plan costs ₹7,447 per month with 1% transaction fees. It includes all of the capabilities of “Basic”, but also features 5 physical inventory locations, 5 staff accounts, improved reports, and automation options.
- Advanced Shopify: The Advanced Shopify plan costs ₹30,164 per month, and features all of the capabilities of “Shopify” plus 15 staff accounts, 8 physical inventory locations, third-party calculated shipping rates, and advanced reports. It also includes tools for estimating and collecting duties and import taxes.
As a quick note, all of these plans come with access to the Shopify POS Lite app, which allows retailers to sell products in-store or in-person at pop-ups and fairs. However, the in-person credit card rates can differ based on your plan and payment processor.
If you want to upgrade your features when selling in-person, the “Retail” plan for Indian businesses costs ₹7,000 per month, and comes with 2 admin accounts, and 1POS Pro location, and unlimited POS logins. You also get the basic features you need to build your online store.
Now we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive into each option in a bit more detail.
The Shopify Starter Plan
The Shopify Starter plan is available to Indian merchants for ₹399 per month. This gives you the option to sell products through social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook Messenger. Plus, you can create “buy buttons” for customers.
However, you can’t build an entire online store with this plan. There’s also no access to some of Shopify’s more advanced tools for customer, inventory, and marketing management.
This is probably the plan you should choose if you’re selling just a handful of products online.
If you already have a website, or want to sell items through social media, the Starter plan is an affordable and user-friendly option.
The Basic Shopify Plan
The Basic Shopify plan for ₹1,994 per month is the cheapest fully-fledged Shopify subscription. It gives you all the tools you need to build your online store, and sell unlimited products.
Plus, you get 2 staff accounts, 24/7 support, and even 1 hydrogen storefront.
This plan comes with:
- a free SSL certificate
- up to 1,000 inventory locations
- discount codes
- abandoned cart recovery
- gift cards
- customer segmentation tools.
You can even create automated marketing campaigns, and store unlimited contact details on your site.
Plus, you can import orders from marketplaces to Shopify, leverage automations, and access international market management tools.
However, there aren’t any tax tools, and the reports you get will be relatively basic. Plus, the transaction fees are a little high at 2%.
We recommend this plan to beginners who want a full store, but without too many bells and whistles. You’ll get all the features you need to start selling and marketing your products, without spending a fortune on a complex subscription.
The Shopify Plan
The Shopify plan for ₹7,447 a month is the mid-level subscription option somewhere between “Basic” and “Advanced”. It expands on the Basic Shopify plan with cheaper transaction fees (1%), 5 staff accounts, and “Standard” reports.
Plus, with this plan, you also get access to more advanced automation options. If you have a larger, or growing team, and you want more in-depth analytics, this is the plan for you. It’s great for companies that are beginning to gain traction in their niche and want more functionality.
However, it’s worth noting there’s not a huge difference between this plan and the “Basic” plan outside of the extra staff accounts and reporting options.
The Advanced Shopify Plan
The Advanced Shopify plan for ₹30,164 per month has a much lower transaction fee of only 0.5%. It also comes with a few extra capabilities on top of the features you get from the standard Shopify package. For instance, you get an advanced report builder, for even deeper insights into your business and operations.
You also get tools for estimating duties and income taxes in advance, so you can keep on top of your financial obligations and tax returns.
As a bonus, you can also create up to 15 staff accounts for your employees, so you can manage your ecommerce business with your team.
We’d recommend the Advanced plan for businesses that are growing at a faster rate, and want help to increase their revenues. The transaction fees are lower overall, so you can save a lot of money in the long term if you’re a high-volume seller.
The Shopify Plus Plan
Shopify Plus is Shopify’s “enterprise level” plan, intended for high-volume businesses that need exceptional levels of customization, and unique features. There aren’t any transaction fees on this plan, but there may still be credit card processing fees to pay.
Plus, you get access to extra cloud storage (up to 200TB), advanced integrations, API solutions, and next-level customer support from the Shopify team.
Although prices for Shopify Plus start at ₹1,52,000 per month, the exact fee you’ll pay will depend on your needs.
You’ll need to contact the Shopify team to get a specific quote tailored to you. Obviously, this is quite an expensive plan, so we only really recommend it for much larger businesses – such as those earning millions in revenue per year.
Transaction Fees
All versions of Shopify, except for Shopify Plus, come with transaction fees. The more expensive your plan, the lower these transaction fees become.
Notably, in many countries, Shopify charges a “payment processing fee” for companies using Shopify Payments – their integrated payment processing tool, and an additional fee for companies using third-party payment processors.
However, in India, Shopify Payments isn’t currently available. This means you pay a “transaction fee” on most plans, but additional card processing fees are based on your payment processing provider.
This also means Shopify can’t provide any “in-person” or “online” credit card processing rates for each plan – because they all depend on the payment processor you choose.
All we know for certain is that the transaction fees are 5% for Shopify Starter, 2% for Basic Shopify, 1% for Shopify, and 0.5% for Shopify Advanced.
If you want to avoid Shopify’s transaction fees entirely, the only way to do this is by choosing the Shopify Plus plan.
However, it’s worth remembering this won’t eliminate the credit card processing fees you need to pay.
Crucially, while we know transaction fees are frustrating, they do serve a purpose.
Whenever a customer buys something from your Shopify store, this costs Shopify money in terms of “processing bandwidth”.
The transaction fee covers the cost of the work that happens behind the scenes. Other companies, like BigCommerce, don’t charge transaction fees at all.
However, these companies can also automatically upgrade you to a higher-priced plan when you make a certain number of sales, to help minimize backend expenses.
Does Shopify Payments Work in India?
Surprisingly, at the time of writing, Shopify Payments is not available in India. You can find a complete list of all the countries Shopify’s integrated payment processing tool (Shopify Payments) is available in here.
Since Shopify Payments isn’t available, you’ll need to set up an integration with a third-party payment provider. Shopify has partnered with a handful of different payment gateways for Indian companies. You can learn more about your options here.
Popular choices include BitPay, 2Checkout, Skrill, and FasterPay.
Other Costs for Shopify Merchants in India
One thing that makes calculating the costs for Shopify in India so complex, is that your fees don’t just come from the pricing plan you choose.
There are various other potential costs you’ll need to consider too if you want to plan your budget effectively.
Here are some of the extra things you’ll need to consider:
Plugins and third-party Apps
Shopify has one of the most extensive app stores in the ecommerce landscape, with more than 3,2000 apps.
Companies can access tools for everything from store automation to marketing, shipping, and order fulfillment, dropshipping and print on demand.
Some of these add-ons are available for free, or feature a one-off price. Others come with their own monthly subscription models to consider.
Shopify Themes
While there are a few great free themes available to business owners using Shopify, most of the more advanced themes and templates will cost something.
If you want a more impressive Shopify theme, then you’ll need to pay extra. Usually, Shopify themes cost between $110 and $350 in the US, so you can expect to pay about the same in India.
The good news is you only need to pay for your theme once, and most options allow you to experiment with the theme for as long as you like before you actually buy it.
Of course, if you want someone to customize your theme for you, you’ll need to pay for a developer too.
Shopify Development Cost in India
Working with a Shopify expert or developer is the best way to customize your ecommerce store to your exact specifications. A developer can help you design a unique custom theme, build apps for your store, or even design a headless commerce experience.
However, the price you pay for developer support will vary. In India, many developers charge the equivalent to around $20 per hour for Shopify help. However, these rates can be a lot higher depending on the type of support you need.
Indeed suggests some Shopify developers earn around ₹4,25,749 per year, while Glassdoor says the average salary for a frontend developer is about ₹24710 per year.
Email Hosting
Shopify doesn’t provide internal email hosting services, although you can send emails to customers through Shopify, using your own email address. This means if you want a professional email address, featuring your business name, you’re going to need to pay for it.
A professional email address can vary in price. Some hosting providers and domain name sellers offer access to email hosting solutions for free.
Domain Name
If you want a custom domain name for your Shopify store, you’ll also need to purchase this separately. Shopify will host your website, but it doesn’t offer a domain name for free. However, you can purchase a domain name from Shopify for around ₹730 per year.
You can always shop around at other domain registrar sites to see if you can find a cheaper alternative too. There are plenty of great domain hosting companies across India.
Cancellation Fees
When you sign up for a Shopify plan, you can choose to pay monthly, or annually. An annual plan comes with a 25% discount, so it could save you some extra cash.
However, you won’t necessarily get a refund if you decide to leave Shopify before the year is up. With this in mind, we recommend beginners choose a monthly plan to give them a little more freedom.
Shopify India POS Pricing
Another “additional cost” you might need to think about when using Shopify for your growing business, is “point of sale” costs. Shopify has its own dedicated point of sale software, which comes in two varieties.
The Shopify Lite plan for POS is included in most Shopify core subscription plans, and comes with all of the basic features you need to manage in-person transactions.
You can access the Shopify app on your smartphone, use inventory management tools to sync order information and data across channels, and even leverage third-party apps.
Plus, you get access to customer profiles to help you connect with your target audience.
A Shopify POS Pro plan requires either the “Retail” plan for Indian storeowners, starting at ₹7,000 per month, or a subscription to Shopify Plus.
Notably, after you pay for your Shopify POS Software, you will need to look at hardware options too. Shopify sells a variety of hardware options such as card readers and registers.
However, you’ll need to contact the team in India to explore your hardware options.
How Does Shopify Compare to Other Platforms in India?
We believe Shopify is one of the best “commerce platform” worldwide, no matter what kind of business you’re running.
It comes with virtually everything a large or small business needs, from SEO tools, and marketing features, to automations.
However, there are some other options out there that may offer additional value for money, depending on your specific needs. Let’s look at some of the best options.
1. Wix – Best Overall Shopify Alternative in India
Wix is a simple and straightforward website builder, ideal for small businesses. It comes with fantastic AI-powered website building tools, exceptional marketing features, and a great range of themes, plugins, and apps to choose from.
Wix is one of the cheapest solutions on the market if you’re just building a standard website, with plans starting at ₹199 for the Lite plan.
However, if you want to sell products, you need at least the “Core” plan, starting at ₹399 per month – equal to Shopify’s Starter plan.
Other plans include “Business” for ₹799 per month, “Business Elite” for ₹1,599 per month, or “Enterprise” for about ₹41,601 per month.
2. BigCommerce – Best Alternative for Large Business
BigCommerce is another excellent tool, with a lot of features similar to Shopify. It also supports omnichannel sales strategies, and allows companies to sell a range of physical, and digital products. Plus, it has it’s own “headless commerce” solution.
Interestingly, the “Indian” version of the BigCommerce site only encourages companies to contact the team to request a demo, rather than listing prices for plans directly.
If we assume the prices are similar to the ones used on the US Pricing page, then BigCommerce is similar in cost to Shopify.
- The Standard plan starts at $39 per month.
- “Plus” costs $105 per month, and “Pro” costs $399 per month.
- There’s also an Enterprise plan available.
The great thing about BigCommerce are there are no transaction fees on any plan. However, you can only take limited transactions on each plan before you’re automatically upgraded to the next.
3. Squarespace – Best Alternative for Small Business
Squarespace is a great alternative to Shopify if you’re looking for amazing professional templates and design tools. It’s commonly used by professionals selling digital products and downloads, as well as creators in the modern market.
Squarespace’s plans start at ₹1,888 for the “Personal” plan, but this doesn’t allow you to sell products. If you want an ecommerce option, you need the Business plan, for around ₹2,709 per month.
There’s also the “Basic Commerce” plan for ₹2,955 per month, and the “Advanced Commerce” plan for ₹5,336 per month. The cheapest business plan comes with 3% transaction fees on all processed payments, but there aren’t any transaction fees on the two more expensive plans.
With Squarespace, you can sell unlimited products, accept donations, and even customize your store with CSS and JavaScript.
However, subscriptions are only available on the most expensive commerce plan. On the plus side, you do get a free domain name with an annual plan.
Shopify India Pricing FAQ
If you want to build a full Shopify store in India, plans start from ₹1,994 per month (paid monthly) with a 25% discount for annual plans. However, there are other costs to consider, such as your domain name, development support, and transaction fees (starting at 2%).
Although Shopify in India lacks some features, such as Shopify Payments, it’s still one of the most impressive ecommerce platforms on the market. We definitely recommend considering Shopify if you’re looking for a high-performing tool for building your online store.
Yes, Shopify is completely legal in India. However, you will need to ensure you are adhering to local tax regulations and commerce rules for your country when starting any online store. You’ll also need to register your business with the right authorities.
