You don’t need us to tell you that well-presented photos significantly elevate our social media presence, blogs, and websites. After all, our brains register images faster than words. So it’s no wonder that high-quality photography can help illustrate and strengthen a point youโ€™re making, a service youโ€™re promoting, or products youโ€™re selling. On top of that, optimized images work wonders for boosting your SEO.ย ย

The bottom line: online business owners shouldn’t underestimate the importance of powerful imagery.ย

So, this begs the question: how do you present your images to the highest degree?ย

Fortunately, there’s a simple answer: with a creative image editor and background removal tool.

One such tool is Depix.ย

Stick around as we explore what Depix has to offer. Hopefully, by the end of this Depix review, you’ll have a better idea of whether this image editor could benefit your business. Let’s get started:

Depix Review: What’s Depix?

Depix review

Depix is a Canadian startup based in Montreal that’s created an AI photo-editing software tool. In 2021, Depix founders raised $2m in seed fundingย from investors. Further to this success, Depix launched in the Summer of 2022.

Depixโ€™s goal is to help everyone, no matter their skill level, create and edit photo-realistic images quickly and easily using AI technology. Depix can be used on any web browser and supports jpeg, png, and web images.ย

Depix Review: Getting Started

Depix review

Itโ€™s simple to sign up. Just head to Depix’s website and click on the ‘Get Started’ button found on most of its web pages. Youโ€™ll then be asked to input an email address and password, agree to Depixโ€™s terms and conditions, and either opt in or out of receiving Depixโ€™s newsletter. Next, Depix will send you an email asking you to verify your account, and thatโ€™s it; youโ€™re sorted!

Once you have an account, youโ€™re asked to specify if youโ€™re:

  • Editing family or personal photos
  • Selling products online
  • Creating creative images
  • Promoting content on social media

Once youโ€™ve done this, youโ€™re then asked to select one of the following aims:

  • Image clean up
  • Photo-realistic images
  • Remove background

Once logged in, youโ€™ll see a blank screen where you can upload or drop an image. Just click ‘Edit,’ and then you can left-click what you want to keep in the image, and if you need to, right-click the bit(s) of the image you want to remove. After each time you right-click, automatic background removal begins.

In addition, you can use the editing bar (found at the bottom of the right-hand pane, from which you can:

  • Edit and change the imageโ€™s background color
  • Erase an object from the background image
  • Crop an image

If youโ€™re happy with the end result, you can download it onto your desktop as a png or paste it to the right-hand pane to compose your new image.ย

Depix Review: Depixโ€™s Core Features

Depixโ€™s features are split into the following categories:

  • Background removal
  • Magic eraser
  • Easy image composition
  • Layerless editing
  • Easy lights and shadows
  • Image library

Below weโ€™ll explore each of these features in turn:

Background Removal

depix background remover

As youโ€™ve probably gathered, this is the tool to remove unwanted backgrounds from your images. To get rid of a background from a picture, take the photo you wish to edit, click on the subject (for example, a product, person, animal, etc.,- whatever item you want to retain) – and voila, Depix removes the background for you.

Magic Eraser

This is the most recent tool introduced by the Depix team, and there isnโ€™t much information about its capabilities. However, please note that although this tool was advertised on Depix’s website, I couldn’t seem to access it when I tested Depix’s free plan.

That said, according to the website, it enables you to remove objects, for example, a product, person, and blemishes from your images. For example, suppose you have a picture of several products and only want to feature one product. In that case, you can use the magic eraser to remove anything from the image you donโ€™t need. Orโ€ฆif you want to remove your ex from your photos, you can do that too!

Easy Image Composition

depix image composition

As weโ€™ve alluded to, Depix adopts a two-canvas approach to image composition:

  1. You upload the image you wish to edit to the left pane of your canvas.
  2. Select the object in the image you want to copy across to the right pane.
  3. Left-click the object with your mouse, and a green dot will appear. After a few seconds, the area will be highlighted. You may need to play around with this to highlight the exact area you want – you can right-click your mouse to reduce the area highlighted. You can move as many objects as you want from a single image. Once done, click the ‘Apply’ button to paste the objects onto the right-hand pane.

In the right-hand pane, you can then create the image you want. You can lighten and darken the image, crop it, add background color, and more.

Then, once youโ€™re happy with the end result, you can download it in a choice of resolutions: standard (free) or Premium (more about Premium in our pricing section). Your image is then downloaded onto your device to use however you wish.

Layerless Editing

If youโ€™ve used photo editing software before, you may know that some tools adopt complicated layer systems to get the objects and backgrounds in your images to interact.

Fortunately, Depixโ€™s layerless editing feature strips all that away. For example, you would benefit from Depixโ€™s layerless editing when modifying an image with several objects. For instance, you could change the order in which they appear in the image (front, side, back, etc.) by dragging them from where they are to where you want them to be, e.g., from front to back.

Easy Lights and Shadows

When creating a brand-new image in the right-hand pane, you can tinker with its lighting and shadows using Depix’s light and color sliders. Where lighting is concerned, you can adjust ambient light, spotlight, low light, and highlight. You can also add ground or wall shadow and adjust the imageโ€™s focus.

For example, if you want to add a ground (drop) shadow to an image, load the image into the left panel and left-click on it to select it. Then, paste it into your right pane. Next, click the shadow button and opt for ground or wall shadow. You can then use the dots to edit the direction of the shadow. Or, you can click the shadow thatโ€™s appeared and move it to where you want it.

Image Library

You’ll see that when you upload an image onto your Depix editing panel, youโ€™ll also have the option of using pictures from Depix’s stock image library. There are 100,000+ images to choose from. Unfortunately, these aren’t organized into categories. Instead, you have to use the search bar to describe the image youโ€™re looking for, e.g., ‘flower.’ Then, all the available images will show up for you to browse through. Once youโ€™ve stumbled across an image you like, youโ€™re free to edit it to your heartโ€™s content!ย

Depix Review: Depix’s Customer Support

If you want to contact Depix, click on their โ€˜Contact Usโ€™ link at the bottom of the Depix homepage. Itโ€™s also found at the bottom of the FAQ page. Fill in your name and email address, and type in your questions and comments in the box provided. Depix promises to reply to you by email within 24 hours.

Alternatively, if you prefer to find the answer yourself, Depix has an FAQs page that’s accessible, again, via a link at the bottom of Depixโ€™s homepage. Alternatively, you can find FAQs listed on each feature page. In some instances, these FAQs are more fulsome than others, although this may reflect how new this software is – after all, itโ€™s still in Beta. However, Depix has Q and As on various topics, including image editing, layering, how to compose a professional-looking image, and more.

There’s also a blog, and at the time of writing, this was a work in progress with just three posts:

  • One relating to their seed funding
  • One on removing image backgrounds
  • Another on product photos for eCommerce

Depix Review: Depix Pricing

Itโ€™s free to sign up to Depix and create an account. After that, you have three options (including a freemium plan). In the case of Depixโ€™s paid packages, you can either pay monthly or annually; the latter comes with a small saving.

Depixโ€™s pricing plans are as follows:

The Free Plan: This is aimed at anyone wanting to use Depix for fun or personal use. The free plan gives you the following:

  • You can edit ten images per week, be they your own images or those from the stock images
  • A maximum image resolution of 735 x 680

If youโ€™re on the Free plan and reach your weekly image limit of ten, youโ€™ll have to start paying or wait until a week has passed to continue using Depix. If you want to upgrade to a paid plan, you can either pay via PayPal or by card. Depix uses Paddle to process its payments. If you opt to pay and then change your mind, you can cancel within 14 days without giving a reason.

The Premium Plan: This is aimed at businesses and costs $9/mo if you pay monthly or $6/mo annually. The Premium plan unlocks the following:

  • You can edit 100 images per week
  • HD resolution
  • Early access to new features (although these are unspecified)

The Custom Plan: This is a tailored account aimed at businesses that want to upload unlimited image numbers to edit. Prices arenโ€™t shown for the Custom account, but you get everything in the previous plans, plus a flexible number of images per week you can edit (the number isnโ€™t specified). If youโ€™re interested in this plan, thereโ€™s a blue โ€˜Contact Salesโ€™ button on the pricing page where you can ask for more info.

Depix Review: Depix’s Pros and Cons

Pros ๐Ÿ‘

  • Thereโ€™s a free plan available
  • Users get access to Depixโ€™s library of stock images
  • Thereโ€™s a good FAQs section on its website with detailed answers to questions.
  • Itโ€™s effortless to remove backgrounds from any images you upload.
  • Depixโ€™s image editor doesnโ€™t leave a watermark on your pictures.

Depix Review: My Final Verdict

All in all, I think Depix is a great idea and fun to use. However, free users may find the 10-image weekly limit somewhat restricting. That said, I found it simple to upload images and search Depixโ€™s library of stock images. I also like how intuitive Depixโ€™s user interface is.

Overall, I think Depix is potentially an ideal tool if you run an ecommerce store and want to enhance your product photos and marketing imagery. For example, it would be effortless to remove the background in your product images and either leave it white or add a color that better fits your brand.ย

Alternative image editing software like Photoshop can be tricky and time-consuming to learn and use. In contrast, the beauty of Depix is that itโ€™s quick (thanks to its AI), incredibly user-friendly, and you can easily download and use your finished images however you want.

That said, itโ€™s evident that this AI-powered software is still a work in progress, and its prices may reflect that. For example, I couldn’t access the magic eraser tool as advertised on its website (on the free version). I also couldn’t access the lighting features on the left pane. I could just access them on the right (so only when you want to create an entirely new picture rather than editing an existing one).

However, you have nothing to lose by giving Depixโ€™s freemium plan a try and seeing whether this tool fits your needs.

Thatโ€™s all from me, over to you. Will you be giving Depix a test drive? Let me know your thoughts in the comments box below!
