  • Step 2: Let us know whether you’re using Shopify Payments, or a different payment gateway (Shopify Payments is the cheapest option if you want to avoid transaction fees).
  • Step 3: If you’re using an external payment gateway, enter the fees for your chosen solution (the average fee is usually around 2.9% plus 30 cents).
  • Step 4: Pick whether you’re paying for Shopify annually, or monthly (there are discounts available for annual plans).
  • Step 5: Scroll down do see how your fees compare for the top 3 Shopify plans (Basic, Shopify, Advanced Shopify, and Shopify Plus).

You can experiment with the calculator as much as you like for free, entering different estimations for monthly revenue, payment gateway fees, and more.

Calculating Shopify Fees: The Costs of a Shopify Store

If you’re starting an ecommerce business, or looking to expand, Shopify can be a phenomenal tool. The platform includes everything business needs to make a profit in the commerce world, from international sales tools, to intuitive themes, and marketing solutions.

Shopify even gives companies the opportunity to set up an international omnichannel sales strategy, with social media integrations, connections to marketplace tools, and point of sale tools.

However, before you begin your Shopify migration, or purchase your first Shopify plan, it’s important to understand all the fees you’ll need to account for.

Shopify Costs: Which Plan Should You Choose?

The first and most obvious cost of running your Shopify store is related to the plan you choose for your subscription.

Shopify is a SaaS (Software as a Service) platform, which requires users to pay monthly for services, hosting, and features.

Shopify plans are available on a monthly, or annual basis, with a discount available for those who pay annually. There are currently 5 plans available:

  • Starter: $5 per month: This is the most basic Shopify plan, intended for selling through social media and messaging apps. You can access a buy button or ecommerce link you can share with customers, but you can’t build your own comprehensive online store.
  • Basic Shopify: $39 per month (monthly), or $29 per month (annually), plus 2.9% and 30 cents per transaction payment fees. This includes access to online store building tools, unlimited products, 2 staff accounts, multiple sales channels, and a free SSL certificate.
  • Shopify: $105 per month (monthly), or $79 per month (annually) plus 2.6% and 30 cents per transaction payment fees. This includes all the features of the Basic plan, plus 5 staff accounts, professional reports, and gift card options.
  • Advanced Shopify: $399 per month (monthly), or $299 per month (annually), with 2.4% plus 30 cents per transaction payment fees. This plan includes all the features of Shopify, with priority shipping and discounts, custom reports, and 15 staff accounts.
  • Shopify Plus: Custom pricing starting at $2,000 per month, with 2.15% transaction fees. This plan includes all of the features of Advanced Shopify, plus access to API tools, advanced customization, premium customer service, and more.

With each Shopify plan, the more you pay for your subscription, the more your credit card and transaction rates will fall.

Other Shopify Fees: Payments, Transaction, and Service Fees

Unfortunately, the price for your Shopify plan isn’t the only thing you’ll need to consider when you’re investing in a Shopify store. As mentioned above, all Shopify plans come with “payment fees” for merchants who use Shopify Payments, and transaction fees for third-party gateways.

There are also additional fees you may need to pay if you want to access advanced services.

Shopify Payment Fees

One good thing about Shopify, is that the built in Shopify Payments service allows you to process transactions without paying any transaction fees. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any costs to consider. Shopify still charges “payment fees”, which vary depending on your plan.

Since Shopify Payments is powered by Stripe, you’ll pay a similar fee for the standard service. However, the higher the price of your subscription, the more of a discount you get:

  • Basic: 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction
  • Shopify: 2.6% plus 30 cents per transaction
  • Advanced: 2.4% plus 30 cents per transaction
  • Shopify Plus: 2.15%

This basically means the more revenue you make in a month, the more likely it is you’ll save money by moving to a more advanced Shopify plan. You can see how everything breaks down using the calculator above.

Shopify Transaction Fees

Although Shopify Payments is an excellent tool for processing ecommerce transactions, it’s not the only option out there. Some companies will still prefer to use better-known payment processing solutions like PayPal or Square. While you can choose to integrate a third-party payment processor into your Shopify store, this incurs an additional fee from Shopify.

The “transaction fee” is added on top of the credit card processing rate you already pay to accept payments (based on your payment provider’s rates). Once again, the transaction fees vary depending on which Shopify plan you use:

  • Basic: 2%
  • Shopify: 1%
  • Advanced Shopify: 0.5%
  • Shopify Plus: 0.15%

As an example, if you were using PayPal to process Shopify payments, you’d pay 2.9% plus 30 cents on all transactions (PayPal’s credit processing rates), plus an extra 2% fee if you had a Shopify “Basic” plan. For a $100 purchase, this means you’d pay $2.90 to PayPal, and $2 to Shopify, resulting in a final payment of $95.10.

Other Shopify Fees

Alongside payment and transaction fees, there may be some additional costs to consider for extra services offered by Shopify. These fees aren’t mandatory, but can provide access to additional services, such as Shopify Expert support (for coding and assistance), and Shopify Shipping, or fulfillment support via the Shopify Fulfillment Network.

Notably, the price you pay for Shopify shipping also varies depending on your plan. Most Shopify plans come with a dedicated Shipping discount, such as:

  • Basic: Up to 64%
  • Shopify: Up to 72%
  • Advanced: Up to 74%
  • Plus: Outstanding

You may also need to account for other costs for:

  • Integrations and add-ons: Some integrations in the Shopify app marketplace have their own monthly fees or annual costs to consider.
  • Point of sale solutions: If you’re selling in-person, you’ll need to pay extra fees for tools like Shopify POS Pro, or an external POS system.
  • Outsourcing: Outsourcing inventory management, picking, and packaging to the Shopify Fulfillment Network.
  • Premium themes: If you want to access a premium theme on Shopify, you’ll need to pay an extra cost. The prices of themes vary.
  • Domains: You can purchase domains directly through Shopify, starting at around $14 for .com domains.
